Diabetes is the body’s inability to properly utilize glucose. Glucose is the basic fuel that our cells use for energy. There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Type 1 usually shows up early in life and is caused from a lack of insulin production due to the destruction of insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas and is linked to an unbalanced autoimmune function. Type 1 diabetes requires insulin dependence. Insulin is the hormone that helps to move glucose from the blood into the cells.
Pranayama teaches you to use the other 90% of your lungs and to neutralize the stress that contributes to high blood sugars associated with diabetes. It also provides a deep cleansing of the body’s tissues and helps treat such problems as high blood pressure, irritability and disturbed sleep. Pranayama breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic response calms the body and neutralizes the stress and anxiety triggered by an overactive sympathetic nervous system.
Chest-Knee Pose - Also called the Knees to Chest pose, this posture provides a great deal of support for digestion. The lower digestive tract is soothed and stimulated by this posture. Lower back pain is also relieved by the stretching of those muscles. It reduces tension.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune dysfunction of the body in which the beta cells in the pancreas, which produce insulin, are destroyed by the body. The result is a lack of insulin to properly facilitate the journey of glucose into the body’s tissues. This causes blood sugars to remain dangerously high while the cells are literally “starving”. The lack of insulin also results in the body’s inability to store fat. Therefore a type one diabetic before diagnosis will in most cases remain rail thin due to the lack of insulin regardless of how much they eat.
It has been known for a long time that exercise is helpful for diabetics. Yoga therapy may help reduce stress levels which could play a part in maturity onset diabetes. But one drawback is that some patients would find it hard to keep up the regular sessions needed to sustain the benefit. All the patients said they would like to see these classes set up on a permanent basis but we don’t have the money.
